WHEN THE FOURTH WALL COMES DOWN.

I know most people don't care about this stuff, and it doesn't apply to a lot of characters, but I've seen people get seriously mad about fourth wall in RP. And I don't want to be the one to put a damper on someone's RP fun time, so here it is.

Gintama often parodies or references pop culture, past and present. It also has a lovely habit of breaking the fourth wall, so I thought I'd give a little info for those interacting with Gintoki.

Gintoki is a huge fan of Jump Weekly, and will probably fanboy over/irritate the Hell out of other characters from Jump. He will most likely also know of characters from other really major anime, comics, and possibly video games, but may or may not choose to acknowledge this. He might talk about reading/watching your canon, or he might just make weird insightful comments. 8D

So if you don't like that kind of thing, just let me know here and I'll work around it.

Since they both fit together fairly well (Most of the differences come from certain manga arcs being used out of order in the anime. BUT REALLY a lot of it is like scene for page the same).

Appearance: http://www.toshokan.bleach7.com/gintama/src/1/Gintama_v01_000.jpg

Psychology: On the surface.. Gintoki is a lazy slob. Well, on the inside he is too. He's lazy, vulgar, and his hair is naturally permed. All of these things, combined with the disinterested expression he normally wears on his face, lead other characters to believe he's no good and worthless. While he can be money-grubbing and have almost no work ethic, he generally has other people's best interests at heart.

Gintoki is considered a madao (old man who lives as he wants but accomplishes nothing), but he actually holds the samurai bushido in high regard.. In his own strange way. While he may act reluctant, or like it's a huge pain in the ass, he's always there to protect those close to him. When Bansai claims that Gintoki has no real reason to fight, now that the Amanto (aliens) are commonplace and won't be driven out, Gintoki tells him that he's always been fighting to protect the same thing, his friends.

Despite his doctor warning him that he has high blood sugar and is on the verge of becoming diabetic, Gintoki has a strong obsession with sweets. Pudding, parfaits, and strawberry milk being among his favorites. He even went so far as to beat up an restaurant full of Amanto because they spilled his parfait. Gintoki's other obsession would be with reading Shounen Jump Weekly. He often goes to great lengths to get his copy on the day it comes out. Usually, he is chided by other characters for reading comic that are aimed at teenage boys, and he sometimes attempts to quit reading it, but is never successful.

Gintoki can be considered to be somewhat of an eccentric person. He often does odd things that really don't seem to make sense. For instance, whenever his sword is damaged beyond repair, he orders a new one from the TV shopping network, and asks them to inscribe "Lake Touya" on it. He never mentions this to others, he just says he got his sword during a school trip to Lake Touya. He also tends to break the fourth wall quite often, referring to himself and others as characters, or talks about the direction the anime/manga is taking.

Most of the time, Gintoki has a pretty nonchalant attitude and is happy as long as he has the most recent Jump Weekly to read, and isn't being pestered. He rarely talks about his past, and says he has no family to speak of. Other characters, such as Katsura and Sakamoto have mentioned that Gintoki has more reason that any of the other original Joui Faction members to be angry at life and fate, but it is never said exactly why. Gintoki shows no signs of this however, and seems to be at least content with lifestyle.

Other Skills/Abilities: Gintoki is a highly skilled fighter, and usually uses a bokken, which is a type of wooden sword, to fight with. He has been training since his childhood, and it's inferred that he's received at least some instruction, but both Nizo and Bansai have commented on his unpredictability in battle. Bansai says that he must be self-taught as his moves are not those normally taught in Kendo.

Gintoki also has above average strength. He's able to cut through a wide array of objects with just his wooden sword, and has even brought down a helicopter using said sword and steels strings from Bansai's shamisen.

Other Weaknesses: Humanity, I guess.

History: As a child, Gintoki attended school with some of the original Joi faction members. Specifically, Tatsuma Sakamoto, Shinsuke Takasugi, and Katsura Kotarou. Nothing is really known about Gintoki's family, as he simply says he doesn't have one when asked. It is implied that Gintoki and his friends looked up to their teacher. Katsura says, when he fights Takasugi, that Gintoki has more reason to hate the world that took their teacher, than all the rest do.

It's unclear what happened between his childhood and late teens, but Gintoki and his classmates entered the Joi War, near its end, to fight against the invading Amanto. It's likely that their teacher was killed by Amanto, or his death was related to the war in some way. On the battlefield, the once calm and lazy young man, Gintoki, became known as Shiroyasha (white demon). This was because of his white/silver hair, and his ability to cut down any warrior he met in battle.

While Gintoki's combat abilities were unrivaled, seeing so many of his comrades injured and killed began to weigh heavily on him. When the war was nearing its end, he suddenly disappeared from battle, leaving others to wonder what might have happened to him. Even now, Gintoki sometimes suffers from vivid nightmares of his times spent in battle, and his failure to save some of his comrades.

After fleeing from combat, Gintoki became something of a vagrant, surviving in any way he could. One winter, he tried to take refuse in a cemetery. There, he met Otose, as she brought an offering of Manju to her husband's grave. When he asked is he could eat one, she told him to ask her husband. He then ate all that she had brought, and told her he couldn't ask a dead guy anything. But he promised then that he would protect her until she died as thanks.

She apparently agreed, and it was likely then that he was given the apartment above Otose's shop, and expected to pay rent. Since his freelancing business is established once the manga/anime starts (and that he seems to have aged between meeting Otose and the first chapter/episode), he probably this business immediately, or at least relatively soon after meeting Otose.

Gintoki lived on his own for a while, arguing with Otose about rent, shrugging off work, and reading Jump. It wasn't until later, at a restaurant, that Gintoki met Shinpachi Shimura. Gintoki sat down to eat a parfait at the restaurant Shimpachi worked at when a rowdy group of Amanto tripped Shimpachi and made him spill Gintoki's parfait. In a fit of rage, Gintoki beat all of the Amanto present unconscious. Shinpachi was amazed, and began to look up to Gintoki as a real samurai.. Until Gintoki slipped his bokken into Shimpachi's belt, to frame him, and took off.

Shinpachi was blamed for the incident and was fired from his job. When he caught up with Gintoki, he demanded that he take responsibility for Shinpachi's lost job. Gintoki didn't, but Shinpachi became a staple at Gintoki's house. He came to work for Gintoki since he was out of a job. And for a short time, the two began to work together.

Not long after though, while rushing to get his weekly jump, Gintoki hit a young girl with his vespa. After some general freaking out, and talk of finding a t-t-t-t-time machine, they tied the girl to the back of the scooter, as she was badly hurt. While driving away, trying to decide what to do, Gintoki, Shinpachi, and the injured girl were attacked by yakuza. The girl woke up and shot them with her umbrella-gun.

She explained that her name was Kagura, and she was an Amanto that looked just like a human, but was much stronger, and she has come from a distant planet because she was tired of living with her poor family. She got suckered into joining the yakuza when she arrived in Edo, and was forced to kill members of rival gangs. She didn't want to live up to the bloodthirsty image of the Yato clan she came from, so she ran from them.

Eventually Gintoki and Shinpachi agreed to help her, and fought off the yakuza. They had planned to drop her off at the terminal so she could go back to her own planet, but she had no money for a ticket. Instead, she decided to stay at Gin's, and the three of them began to work as freelancers together.

The group did many jobs together, and managed to barely make ends meet most of the time. After at first being harassed, they eventually became friends with the Shinsengumi, and the new Joi faction, run by Katsura. Despite the Shinsengumi's feud with Katsura's group, they all ended up working together in the face of some crises, such as against the Kihetai, a terrorist group led by Takasugi.

Gintoki is being taken from the most current point in the manga and anime, and will continue along with the canon as it advances.

Reality Description: Since the late Edo period, Amanto have taken over Edo. the Samurai fell after the Joi war, in which they attempted to banish the aliens. The Amanto won this war obviously, and many moved into seats of power, or gained influence over the government because of their status on other planets. Swords and guns were banned, save for use by the Shinsengumi, the police of the era who worked under the government officials.

Because of the Aliens' presence in Edo, the city took on many of the appearances of modern day Tokyo. Many of the buildings still resemble those of the Edo period, but the Amanto brought technology with them. There are some skyscrapers in the skyline, cars, computers and the internet, and even Gintoki drives a rather modern looking Vespa. It's pretty much a random mashing of past and present Japan.

In Edo, Gintoki resides in Kabukichou. This district in Edo resembles the one that exists today in Tokyo. It's basically the city's redlight district. There are several bars, host/hostess clubs, and even love hotels around. Gintoki's apartment is above the Snack Shop owned by Otose. It's a moderately sized apartment with sparse furnishings. And Kagura sleeps in the closet. :|

First Person Speaking Sample: Hey hey, shopkeep! Hey! [Sighs, rubbing his head.] This is troubling.. I thought this would be the kind of shop that would sell Jump on time.. But..

Hey shopkeep! I said I wanted to buy Jump, not get sucked into it! Unless.. [With a look of determination, unsheathes his bokken and holds it in front of him.] Ban.. KAI!

[And after a moment of waiting, he lowers it disappointedly and looks around the plane once more.] Man, what is this anyway? A one-shot? Psyren?! CAPTAIN HARLO-- No no, that's not Jump at all.. DRAGON BALL?! THAT SERIES ENDED AND CAUSED TOO MANY PROBLEMS! SHOULDN'T I BE IN THE TOP THREE?! TOP THREEEEEEEE!

Third Person Writing Sample: A young man sat motionless on a bench in the park. He stared intently at the space next to him on the bench. There sat an ice cold carton of milk. This battle of resolve had been going on for several minutes(though in his mind it had been hours), ever since he had sat down. This milk was taunting him. Was it Strawberry? Chocolate? A gift from god? Bait for some insidious trap?

This could be some Yakuza's milk, and the moment his fingers grazed the cool, papery exterior, a barrage of bullets could leave him bleeding on the ground with his thirst gone unquenched. On the other hand, it could have just been forgotten by some negligent park goer. He could then pick it up and enjoy the delicious beverage with no consequences, assuming they were long gone. Was it worth the risk? Dare he find out?

His hand struck out suddenly, without warning. He grasped the carton and lifted it. He looked to his left, then his right. Nothing. Not a noise, movement or anything similar. Just rolling fog and silence. With a triumphant smile, he held the drink up to see the label.. And his face fell instantly.

Plain. Why had the fates betrayed him this way?!

"Ha..."

He sighed, hanging his head for a moment. This didn't help at all! Sure, there was the calcium he needed to be at his best.. But with such a flavor? Now he was alone in some cloudy park with nothing to keep his blood sugar up! WHAT IF HE FELL OVER DEAD RIGHT HERE?! Well, maybe he still had enough time..

He got to his feet, tucking the milk away into his clothes. He would just head over to the store and trade it for some strawberry. He grinned to himself at this prospect, and headed out to the street.
